 Warm-up 5 minutes
 - Greet the class and introduce your name. Have pupils Whole class
 greet and introduce themselves. 
 - Option 1: Have one group of pupils sing the song on 
 p. 16 in front of the class. The class claps their hands. 
 - Option 2: Invite one pupil to sing the song with his/her 
 own lyrics.
 - Option 3: Give pupils some flashcards (of a hat, bag, 
 apple, can, car, cup) and let him/her introduce them, 
 e.g. This is my bag. 
 - Option 4: You may ask some pupils to show and 
 introduce things they have in the classroom, e.g. This TAN THANH PRIMARY SCHOOL 
 is my bag. This is my book.
 - Have pupils open the books and look at Unit 4, Lesson 
 1 p. 17, saying Open the books and look at Unit 4, 
 Lesson 1 (Page 17).
 1. Listen and repeat 10 minutes
 Step 1: Open books or access sachmem. Have pupils look at the Whole class
 picture, saying Look at the picture, please! and answer 
 some questions such as What can you see? Can you see a 
 dog? Yes, this is a dog. Draw pupils’ attention to the 
 words next to the things/pets and the colour of the letter 
 D/d (as mentioned in Input in Teacher’s guide). Check 
 comprehension.
 Ask pupils to point to the letter D/d, saying Look at letter 
 Step 2: D/d. Have them listen and repeat the sound of the letter Individual 
 D/d, saying Listen and repeat, please! more than once, if work
 necessary.
 Tell pupils to point to the door and the word door, saying

 Point to the door/the word “door”. Ask them to listen and work

 play the recording again, if necessary, for pupils to do

 Step 1: Open books or access sachmem, or poster stick on the Whole class
 board. Have pupils look at the picture/poster again, 
 saying Look at the picture/poster, please! Ask them to 
 describe the picture. Draw their attention to the letter D/d 
 and the things/pet, if necessary.
 Get them to point to the letter D/d and say it, saying Point 
 Step 2: to the letter D/d and say, please! Individual 
 Ask them to point to the door and say the word door, work
 Step 3: saying Point to the door and say “door”, please! Give 
 further support to those pupils who find it difficult to do 
 the task.
 Follow the same procedure with other things. Go around

 Ask pupils to work in pairs or in groups to look at the Pair or group 
 picture, point to the letter D/d, the things/pet and say the work

 sound of the letter and the words in front of the class. If Whole class

 Step 6:
 Fun corner Red words, green words 7 minutes
 Step 1: Place all of the vocabulary cards face down in two lines Whole class
 between the two teams. Each team has three 
 representatives.
 Step 2: Tell pupils how the game is played: Divide the class into 
 two teams. Each team has three pupils. There are two 
 rows of word cards in green and red. The words in Unit 4 
 are red and the words in the previous units are green. 
 Pupils take turn to take cards and read the words. They 
 only win when pronouncing the words correctly and keep 
 the cards. The team with the most cards is the winner. 
 Check comprehension. Say Can you see the cards? OK, 
 now let’s play the game.
 The first player picks a card from the top of the line. If the 
 Step 3: card is green and the player can read the word, he/she Group work
 holds the card and picks another card. If the player can’t 
 read the green word, you may offer help. The player 
 repeats the word and places the card on the bottom of the

 - Greet the class and introduce yourself, saying: Whole class
 Hi. I’m + name. Encourage pupils to greet and 
 introduce their names, e.g. Hi, I’m Hoa.
 - Option 1: Invite a few pupils to point to the 
 picture/poster and pronounce the sound of the 
 letter D/d and say the words duck, dog, door, 
 desk.
 - Option 2: Ask a group of four to play Red 
 words, green words with the target vocabulary 
 they have learnt.
 - Option 3: Have pupils do the project, page 12 
 (Workbook) in pairs or groups.
 - Get pupils to open their books and look at 
 Lesson 2, p. 18 (saying Open the books and look

 3. Listen and chant 10 minutes
 Step 1: Books open or Sachmem access. Have pupils look Whole class
 at the chant. Say Look at the chant, please! Draw
 pupils’ attention to the first verse and explain its 
 meaning. Ask them to pay attention to the letter D/d 
 and the words duck, dog and the phrase A duck and 
 a dog. Check comprehension.
 Step 2: Play the recording for pupils to listen and to get Individually
 familiarized with the tune, saying Listen to the
 verse, please! Then play the recording again, ask 
 pupils to listen and repeat, line by line, saying 
 Step 3: Listen again and repeat, please! After that, play the Whole class 
 recording for them to listen and repeat until they and 
 feel confident. Give further support to those pupils individual 
 who find it difficult to do the task. work
 Step 4: Follow the same procedure with the second verse. 
 Show pupils how to chant and clap their hands. 
 Correct pronunciation, if necessary. 
 Step 5: Play the recording all the way through. Ask pupils Groups work
 to listen and repeat the chant individually and in 
 chorus, saying Listen and chant, please!
 Step 6: Put the class into two groups to practise chanting Whole class 
 and clapping. Each of the groups should sing one 
 verse of the chant. 
 Extension: Invite some groups to the front of the class to chant 
 and clap their hands. The rest of the class may clap 
 their hands along to the rhythm. Say Excellent! 
 when they perform well. 
 For a better class, help pupils change some lines of 
 the chant and sing it in front of the class. E.g. 
 D, d, a dug.

 4. Listen and tick 7 minutes
 Step 1: Books open or Sachmem access. Have pupils point Whole class 
 to the pictures of Question 1 and say what they can 
 see, saying Point and say, please! Can you see a 
 dog? Can you see a duck? Yes. I can see a dog. I 
 can see a duck. Draw pupils’ attention to the boxes 
 next to the letters a and b. Check comprehension.
 Invite some pupils to point to the pictures and say the 
 Step 2: words in front of the class, saying Point to the Individual 
 pictures and say, please! E.g. 1a: a dog, 1b: a duck. work
 Play the recording of the first sentence for pupils to 
 Step 3: listen several times, if necessary, and to tick the TAN THANH PRIMARY SCHOOL 
 box. 
 Step 4: Ask pupils to say what they have heard and ticked. Individual 
 Say What did you hear? If some pupils say “This is work
 a dog”. Let them tick the box a. If some pupils say Whole class
 “This is a duck”? Let them listen to the recording 
 again until they give the correct answer.
 Follow the same procedure with question 2. Give 
 Step 5: further support to those pupils who find it difficult 
 to do the task.
 Call a few pupils to the front of the class to point to 
 Step 6: the pictures and say what they have heard. E.g. 1. 
 This is a dog, 2. This is a desk.

 5. Look and trace 10 minutes
 Step 1: Sachmem access. Have pupils look at the letter D Whole class
 (upper case) and the letter d (lower case). Say What 
 can you see? Point to the upper case D and say This 
 is the upper case D. Then point to the lower case d 
 and say and this is the lower case d. Ask some 
 pupils to make sure if they recognize the two forms 
 of the letter. Then have pupils look at Sachmem and 
 identify how the letter D (upper case) and the letter 
 d (lower case) is traced. 
 Step 2: Tell pupils to trace the letter D/d, saying Now use Individual 
 your pencil to trace the letter D/d. You can work
 demonstrate by air tracing or tracing the broken 
 lines of the letter D/d. Then let pupils do the 
 tracing. Give further support to those pupils who 
 find it difficult to do the task.
 Step 3: Check the results of pupils’ tracing and give Pair work
 feedback. Ask pupils to work in pairs and swap 
 their answers, saying Now work in pairs and check 
 the answer. Give pupils time to work. Go around 
 and offer help, if necessary.
 Step 4: Ask some pupils to show what they have done. Whole class
 Praise them if they have done well, saying Well 
 Step 5: done! or You’ve done a good job!
 If there is enough time, write the letter D/d in 
 broken lines on the board and invite some pupils to 
 trace them.

 picture of the countryside. Find out if pupils live or 
 have been to the countryside. What did they do? What 
 did they see? 
 Option 2 Group work
 Put pupils into teams and have them think of as many

 Have one group of pupils sing the song on page 16 in Group work
 front of the class. The class claps their hands. 
 1. Listen and repeat. 10 minutes
 Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the picture (say “Look at the Whole class
 picture.”). Ask questions to help them identify the 
 context (The picture shows the countryside. There is a 
 rainbow, a river and a road. On the road, there is a 
 woman riding a moped and a girl riding a bike. 
 Rainbow, river and road are labelled, with the letter r 
 in red.). 
 Step 2: Have pupils point to the letter R/r (say “Point to the Individual work
 letter R.”). Explain that the name of the letter R/r is 
 different to its sound (say “Listen. /ɑː(r)/ /r/.” 
 Step 3: Play the recording of the name and sound of the letter Whole class
 R/r and encourage pupils to repeat (say “Listen and Individual work
 repeat.”). Do this several times, with pupils repeating 
 both individually and in chorus. Correct their 
 pronunciation if necessary, and praise them when their 
 pronunciation is good. 
 Step 4: Have pupils look at the rainbow (say “Look at the Whole class
 rainbow.”). Then have them point to the word rainbow 
 (say “Point to the word rainbow.”). Draw their 
 attention to the colour of the letter R/r (say “Look at the 
 colour of the letter r. It is red.”). 
 Step 5: Play the recording of rainbow and encourage pupils to Whole class
 repeat (say “Listen and repeat.”). Do this several times, Individual work
 with pupils repeating both individually and in chorus. 
 Correct their pronunciation if necessary, and praise 
 them when their pronunciation is good. 
 Step 6: Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for river and road. Whole class

 Step 7: Play the recording in full and encourage pupils to Whole class
 repeat the name and sound of the letter R/r, rainbow, Individual work
 river and road both individually and in chorus. 
 Extension: For better pupils, use the new and learnt vocabulary in Individual work
 Unit 3 (sea, sail, sand) and Unit 4 (rainbow, river, 
 road) to make simple sentences, using the structure 
 learnt in Unit 3: Let’s look at the ____!
 2. Point and say. 7 minutes
 Step 1: Have pupils point to the letter R/r and correctly Whole class
 pronounce its name and sound (say “Point to the letter 
 R. Say /ɑː(r)/. Now say /r/.”) 
 Step 2: Have pupils point to and correctly pronounce the word Whole class
 rainbow (say “Point to the rainbow. Say rainbow.”). Individual work

 individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation 
 if necessary, and praise them when their pronunciation 
 is good.

 Steps 1 to 3. Go around the class to offer help or correct Pair work
 pupils’ pronunciation, if necessary.
 Fun corner: Board race 8 minutes
 Step 1: Divide the class into teams (the number of teams will Whole class
 depend on the number of words, as each pupil should 
 be holding a different beginning or ending). Give each 
 team a set of flashcards and tell them to share them out 
 so that each pupil has one card. Say “You are going to 
 play Board race.” 
 Step 2: Tell each team to stand in a circle and hold up their Group work
 flashcards, so that they can all see what is written on 
 them. 
 Step 3: Explain that when you call out a word, e.g. rainbow, the Whole class
 two pupils who are holding the beginning and ending of 
 the word must find each other, run to the board and stick 
 the flashcards in the correct order. The fastest pair wins 
 one point. 
 Step 4: Play the game. The team with the most points wins. Group work
 Wrap-up: 5 minutes
 Revise the main teaching point of the lesson: the sound Whole class
 of the letter r and the words rainbow, river, road.
 Option 1
 Using sachmem.vn, have pupils look at the things in the Whole class
 picture and repeat the words after the recording.
 Option 2
 Using Poster for Unit 4, ask pupils to point to the things Individual work
 in the picture and say the words. For better pupils, 
 teacher may cover the words and ask them to point to 
 the things and say the words aloud.

 Have pupils play Slap the board. For better pupils, Individual work

 letter R/r.

 Ask the class to play Board race again, using the Group work
 words in Lesson 1, Unit 4 and those in the 
 previous units, saying Now let us play Board

 Get pupils to play What’s Missing? Game, using Group work
 the pictures and flashcards with the incompleted

 Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the picture and have Whole class
 them point to the road (say “Look at the picture.

 Step 2: Say “There’s a road.” and encourage pupils to Whole class
 repeat. 
 Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for river and rainbow. Whole class
 Step 4: Play the recording of the chant to familiarize Whole class
 pupils with the words and rhythm 
 (say “Listen.”). 
 Step 5: Have pupils point to each line of the chant Individual 
 (e.g. say “Point to line one.”). Play the recording work
 of each line and encourage pupils to chant

 Step 6: Play the recording in full and encourage pupils to Whole class

 complete the activity (say “Listen and circle.”). work
 Step 3: Play the recording again, if necessary (say “Listen Individual

 Step 4: Check the answers by asking “a or b?” When Whole class
 pupils answer correctly, confirm by saying Individual 
 “1a. There’s a river.”/ “2b. There’s a road.” and work
